Synopsis
Wild Weasels
In
an age of deadly radar-guided missiles, electronic warfare is
an
essential part of air combat. Put yourself in the seat of a
Wild Weasel
aircraft as it flies its harrowing low altitude electronic warfare
missions
of USAFE – the US Air Force in Europe!
First
In, Last Out: The motto of the Wild Weasels hints at the
dangers
faced by the Wild Weasels crews: first in to attack enemy radar
and
missile sites, last out to protect every other member of the
strike
package. Wild Weasels pilots explain their dangerous mission.
Hunter-Killer:
The Wild Weasels at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany fly
two aircraft, the F-4G which hunts for the enemy radar, and
the F-16,
electric jet, which kills the radar targets with its sophisticated
Harm missiles.
See how these two combat aircraft perform together.
Wild
Weasel Mission: Sit in on an actual Wild Weasel mission
briefing.
Then strap in as we take you aboard Wild Weasel aircraft for
a mission
over the German countryside.
Ravens:
Supporting the Wild Weasels are the sleek EF-111 Raven
electronic jamming aircraft. See how these elegant warplanes
disrupt the
enemy with electronics instead of bombs.
Wizard
War
One
of the most secret realms of modern combat is electronic warfare.
Electronic sensors probe the modern battlefield looking for
targets. They
have become so effective that anything that can be seen can
be destroyed.
But modern electronics can also be used to defend aircraft and
ships by
blinding the sensors. This see-saw battle of electronic
wits is the Wizard War.
The
Electronic Eye: Radar has been one of the most important
innovations
in military technology in the 20th Century. It enabled fighters
to find their
targets in all weather and at night, and it enabled battleships
to accurately
blast their opponents at ranges unimaginable only a few years
earlier. But
something had to be done to protect friendly forces from the
enemy radar’s
deadly gaze. New electronic weapons and electronic counter measures
were
developed to blind radar’s electronic eye. In a deadly game
of cat-and-mouse,
one side’s latest high-tech inventions were soon rendered powerless
by the
electronic tricks and deception of the clever opponent.
The
Secrets of Stealth: One of the most important ideas in electronic
defense
is Stealth. New inventions help make aircraft virtually invisible
to enemy radar.
Discover the real story behind Stealth, from the first efforts
with the Quail decoy
missiles in the 1950’s, the ultra-secret SR-71 Blackbird, and
the latest in
Stealth planes like the F-117, B-2 Stealth Bomber and F-22 Advanced
Tactical Fighter.
