 Synopsis

Airborne Assault

When military crises erupt around the globe, the U.S. Army calls on its
rapid reaction forces. The elite 82nd Airborne Division has been in the
forefront of U.S. military actions over the past decade Operation Urgent
Fury in Grenada, Operation Just Cause in Panama, and Operation Desert
Storm in the Arabian Gulf.

Assault From the Sky: The 82nd Airborne Division has a proud history,
having been one of the pioneers of military paratroop assault. See
exciting footage of some of the 82nd Airborne’s World War II missions.

Parachute: How does a modern combat parachute work? Visit Ft. Bragg
in North Carolina and see how paratroopers prepare to undertake
hair-raising combat jumps.

Heavy Metal: Best known as a superb light infantry force, the 82nd
Airborne can call on the firepower of its supporting units. The M551
Sheridan armored vehicle gives the division added punch. Marvel at
remarkable footage of the Sheridan being parachuted and air-dropped.

Drop Zone: Take your seat aboard on Air Force C-141 Starlifter jet
transport as a unit of the 82nd Airborne takes part in a daytime paratroop
jump. Follow the paratroopers as they strap on their parachutes, board the
aircraft, hook up their static lines, and parachute out of the aircraft from
altitudes of only 1000 feet!

Ranger Force

Even in an era of high tech warfare, the basic fighting skills of the combat
infantryman remain essential. In the US Army, the Rangers carry out many
of the most difficult of the infantry missions. But the Rangers are much
more than just another elite commando force. Soldiers from other combat
branches are trained as Rangers to accentuate their leadership skills.

Ranger: Join us at the Ranger school at Fort Benning as teams from Ranger
units around the world compete in the most grueling endurance contest in
the US Army, the annual Best Ranger competition. The competition helps
explain why Rangers are considered the fighting spirit of the US Army today.

Best Ranger: Set out with the two man Ranger teams as they undergo
strenuous tests of their physical and mental stamina: night road marches,
small arms competitions, canoe races, helicopter drops. It is a 72 hours
marathon by which all other endurance contests pale in comparison.

Ranger Stakes: The Best Ranger competition is as much a contest of brain
as brawn. It is not simply the ability to endure, but the will to endure. Take
a seat in a combat chopper as Rangers are parachuted in a drop zone.

The Darby Queen: After three days of non-stop tension, the rangers are
thrown into a grueling obstacle course followed by a dare-devil water
confidence trial. All for the pride of being named Best Ranger!
